The most important accessory of an electric bicycle is its motor. The motor of an electric bicycle basically determines the performance and grade of the vehicle. The motors used in electric bicycles are mostly high-efficiency rare-earth permanent-magnet motors, which are mainly divided into three types: high-speed brushed geared motors with wheel reduction, low-speed brushed motors, and low-speed brushless motors.

High-speed brushed geared motors combine a high-speed motor with a reduction gearbox. They offer strong torque, quick starts and good hill-climbing ability in a relatively light and compact package, which makes them popular for folding and city bikes.

Low-speed brushless motors, on the other hand, run quietly with no brush wear, require little maintenance and deliver a smooth, refined ride. Because there is no gearbox, they are extremely reliable and are the preferred choice for premium touring and mountain e-bikes.

When choosing an electric bicycle, riders should match the motor type to their intended use — commuting, touring or off-road — to get the best balance of range, torque and durability.
